Client Stories: Computer Scientist & Non-Profit Executive Ayla Bell
Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about what you do?
My name is Ayla Bell, I am a trained computer scientist fully converted to non-profit executive. I am a volunteer Board Member of my HOA, my daughter's PTA, and the prestigious Palo Alto Pickleball Club.
What motivated you to get a new headshot? How old was your previous headshot?
This past year, I was asked to speak to the two communities I respect most: my MIT classmates and the Circus Center in San Francisco. Both speeches were about my late Chinese acrobatics teacher, Master Lu Yi, and the profound influence he had on how Americans learn. Both groups asked for a recent photo to include in their event promotional materials, and the best I could do was a selfie I took for my husband after a hair appointment last year. I felt this presentation of myself was disrespectful to the memory of the incredible person I was trusted to represent, so I sought a new headshot as soon as I could.
How did you feel about your old headshot, and what were you looking for in your new one?
If we're talking honestly about professional headshots, my last one was taken 25 years ago. Back then, I was passionate about acting and actively auditioning. Those headshots served a very different purpose. Now, I want something authentic and beautiful that represents who I am, not who you can imagine me being.
In what ways do you think your new headshot has impacted your business, visibility or job search?
I'm just beginning to see the impact, but it's clear I'm setting a very high standard. Others are asking themselves, "Why don't I have something that great?"
Have you received any feedback on your new headshot?
Oh yes. All positive.
How important do you think a professional headshot is for someone in your field?
It is extremely important to have a headshot you're thrilled to show off. What's better than responding immediately to a request for a recent headshot with something more stunning than what anyone else submits? It's a huge relief and a confidence booster.
What advice would you give to someone considering getting a new headshot?
Do it. Do it yesterday! You'll never say, "Gosh, I wish I didn't have these great images of myself."
Were you nervous or uncomfortable with the idea of having your photos taken and if so how was the experience in the end?
Not at all. I'm a performer.
How did you prepare for your headshot session, and do you have any tips for others on how to get ready for theirs?
You've got to take it seriously. Get you hair and makeup done. Get good sleep. Treat it like it will be the last headshot you'll ever need to take.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience or the impact of your new headshot?
Don't be afraid to incorporate your non-business activities into your session. My pickleball headshot is a huge hit.
How was your experience working with S72 for your headshot session?
Jeff is efficient and no-nonsense. His studio is clean and focused. I appreciated previewing my images on a huge screen during the session.
