Client Stories: Santa Cruz Engineering Manager Sierra Murphy
Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about what you do and your industry?
I'm Sierra, and I'm a Senior Software Engineering Manager from Colorado, currently living in Santa Cruz. I've been in the industry for about 10 years, and moved in to management roles over the past 3 years.
What motivated you to get a new headshot? How old was your previous headshot?
I've never had a headshot! I gave a talk at work and was asked to speak at a 1k person all-hands last year, and both asked for headshots. When I came up empty and had to send a blurry candid, I knew it was time to get a professional photo.
How did you feel about your old headshot prior to coming to me, and what were you looking for in your new one?
I didn't know what to expect; I don't love photos of myself, so I was just hoping for something mature and professional. I was really pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the end results!
In what ways do you think your new headshot has impacted your business, visibility or job search?
I'll be using my headshots for internal and external engagements, LinkedIn, and internal communication. I feel like it is a much better representation of my leadership position and career ambitions than the blurry night mode vacation photo I was using as a placeholder.
Have you received any feedback or comments on your new headshot?
Not yet! Today is the first day I'm deploying them to all of my profiles.
How important do you think a professional headshot is for someone in your field?
Very. It's a lot of peoples' first impression of me, whether on LinkedIn or at work. Putting a professional and polished foot forward is important to establish a respectable baseline for in-industry collaboration, and for pursuing external job opportunities.
What advice would you give to someone considering getting a professional headshot?
Do it! It's an investment in your professional persona. It communicates confidence and competence, and can last you decades.
Were you nervous or uncomfortable with the idea of having your photos taken and if so how was the experience in the end?
Yes, extremely nervous! I'm not used to taking photos and don't typically like photos of myself. I was afraid of blowing my opportunity by looking stiff, awkward, or nervous. In the end it was really quick and surprisingly comfortable. I felt nervous and silly but the longer I was there, the more I could relax.
How did you prepare for your headshot session, and do you have any tips for others on how to get ready for theirs?
I had my hair and makeup done, and tried on several outfits based on online recommendations / research. I would highly recommend investing in the prep, and wearing something you feel fully comfortable in. I would also recommend taking the full day off and creating a lot of buffer time between appointments so you don't have to rush.
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your experience or the impact of your new headshot?
This headshot felt like a real professional milestone for me. I feel more confident and adult than ever.
How was your experience working with S72 for your headshot session?
Great! All of the communication was clear, and I appreciated the reminders, tips, and guides. It helped me plan a seamless day to prepare.
